Yola Monakhov Stockton was born in Moscow, in the former Soviet Union, and grew up in New York City. She studied Comparative Literature, and received a Master’s degree in Italian from Columbia University. From 1999 to 2005, she worked as a freelance photographer for the New York Daily News and the Trust for Public Land. Her first monograph, The Nature of Imitation [Schilt Publishing, Amsterdam] was published in 2015. She lives in Buffalo, New York with her husband and two children.
