Scott Kelly: There Are No Lifeboats on Mars

Scott Kelly is a retired American astronaut who has spent a total of 520 days in space, including a year-long mission to the International Space Station. (He’s also the twin brother of former astronaut Mark Kelly—making him and Mark the only siblings who have both been to space.) In this interview with Topic, recorded on November 9, 2018, Kelly applauds continued space exploration but is skeptical of current plans for the human colonization of Mars—especially if the travelers get a one-way ticket. “Basically, you’re planning on them dying on another planet,” Kelly says. “I don’t know if that’s the ethical thing to do.”
